Our research foci

Our departments and institutes are ranked among the best in the UK for biological and environmental sciences, and our students will be supervised by some of the leading scientists with international reputations in our research themes.
In addition, the ACCE partnership will collaborate with more than 30 external organisations, including business, policy-makers, and public and third-sector organisations, such as the Environment Agency, Cheshire Wildlife Trust, Natural England, Unilever and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. See here for our Partnerships pages.

Our ACCE partnership has an unparalleled strength in environmental biology. For example: the universities of Sheffield and York have world-leading ecological and ecosystem expertise which is greatly enhanced by the molecular and evolutionary strengths at Liverpool. The policy and societal impact research at York benefits from interactions with the unique skills and data resources of CEH. Our collective research strengths and PhD projects are grouped into the following four research themes:
Securing ecosystem services and environmental resources
Predicting and mitigating impacts of climate change
Understanding the dynamics of biodiversity
Investigating mechanisms of evolutionary change: genes to communities
